St Cuthbert’s Hospice has announced the appointment of Laura Barker as its Chief Executive following the retirement of Paul Marriott after 12 years at the organisation.

Previously Head of Income Generation at St Cuthbert’s Hospice, Laura was the standout choice in the charity’s search to find the best candidate to step into this incredibly important role.

Laura joined the organisation in April 2011 and has worked in several roles during that time. She has understandably developed a significant understanding of the diverse challenges facing the sector and the need for excellent care services for the people of County Durham.

Laura Barker said, “St Cuthbert’s Hospice is an incredibly special charity. I am inspired every day by the compassion and care shown by our wonderful team of staff and volunteers and the generosity of our supporters.”

“I am delighted to have been appointed to the role of Chief Executive at St Cuthbert’s Hospice and I am looking forward to continuing to work alongside our dedicated team to carry forward our mission and vision – ensuring we continue to meet the needs of our community both now and in the future.”

St Cuthbert’s Hospice first opened its doors in 1988 and has cared for thousands of individuals and families in this time. The charity provides their care free of charge to people from the point of diagnosis, during treatment and towards the end of life. Its services were reduced in January following a redundancy process due to financial pressures. The cost-of-living crisis, rise in National Insurance and central government funding not rising in line with inflation were all contributing factors.

St Cuthbert’s Hospice must raise £3.8 million every year, with only 42% coming from commissioning. The remainder must be raised by donations, sales from its nine charity shops and gifts in wills.

I am delighted for Laura as she takes up this role. I know she will find it as rewarding and fulfilling as I have done. I am also thrilled for the Hospice. Laura is totally committed to the delivery of services that the people of Durham need and deserve. I look forward to seeing the Hospice grow and develop under her stewardship.”
