Our Hospice is designed to be a warm and inviting space, providing comfort to patients and their visitors. From the cosy patient bedrooms to the light and airy Living Well Centre, every corner of St Cuthbert’s Hospice is welcoming and safe.
Visiting the In-Patient Unit
Visitors are welcome to the hospice at any time day and night. No limit is placed on the number of people who can come and see a patient staying with unless a patient asks us to limit their visitors.
Children of all ages are always made to feel welcome at the Hospice and it is often nice for other patients to see, and hear, youngsters visiting.
Welcoming your pets
We understand just how important pets can be in our lives. Over the years, we have enjoyed many pet visits most commonly from cats and dogs, but we have welcomed many smaller, and larger, furry friends too. We just ask that you please mention their visit to a member of staff beforehand and that pets stay on their lead when in public areas. Only assistance dogs are allowed into the coffee shop.
In-Patient Lounge
In the In-Patient Unit, there is a lounge area with sofas, armchairs and tables, for our patients and their relatives to relax in. There is also a small tea room area for all patients and their circle of family and friends to use. This area is supplied with refreshments, eating utensils, a microwave and fridge.
Keeping yourself and others safe
Please continue to help us keep our patients and staff as safe as possible. Please do not visit if you are ill. If you have a cough, cold, diarrhoea, vomiting or any other infectious condition, contact the ward for advice before visiting. Remember, we are always happy to support you with arranging virtual visits.
Hand Hygiene remains vital and is considered one of the most important ways to reduce the transmission of infections. When visiting, ALWAYS clean your hands using soap and water or use alcohol-based hand rubs. Do this when you enter or leave the Hospice, a patient’s room or access other areas of the building.
Accessibility
Our Hospice and gardens are accessible to wheelchair users with disabled facilities in all areas. If you have a physical, sensory or neurological impairment that may affect your ability to visit us or access our services, please talk to the person leading your care or call on 0191 386 1170 and we will do everything we can help. Accessibility is extremely important to us, so please do let us know if there’s anything we can do to improve this further.
No smoking
Smoking and vaping are not permitted in any part of the hospice buildings or grounds. However, we recognise that some patients continue to smoke and therefore a seated smoking area is provided outside to use.
Facilities
We have an onsite coffee shop open to all visitors and members of the public. Visitor toilets, including accessible toilets, are available. We offer a free Wi-fi service throughout the building. Our award-winning gardens can offer a welcome place to wander and enjoy the outdoors. We understand the importance of remembering loved ones and our In Memory Garden is open all day every day for anyone who would like to visit for a moment of reflection.
