Five acres are lovingly cared for by a hugely dedicated team of volunteers. The team work tirelessly in all seasons, and all conditions, to make sure the grounds look their best for all who visit. Their efforts have been recognised by multiple awards, and will shortly be expecting an annual visit from the Northumbria In Bloom judges.

Open Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays 11am-3pm

Our Victorian-style greenhouse is the jewel in the crown of our vast Hospice grounds. Here our dedicated volunteers grow plants to fill our plentiful borders and make sure they look their best all seasons. Visitors tell us often how much the gardens mean to them when they come to St Cuthbert’s. As well as being a beautiful outlook for our patients and their visitors, our day guests, staff and volunteers also get to enjoy the gardens. The greenhouse is sometimes used for therapy sessions for guests of the Living Well Centre.

The gardens provide us with space to grow the freshest fruit and vegetables for our kitchen, and flowers to be displayed around the Hospice. Any surplus fruit and veg which can be bought when from our ‘veg shop’ when the grounds are open to visitors, we also sell plants and hanging baskets can be made to order. All plant sales are cash only.

Also in the gardens we have a dementia friendly sensory garden and ‘In Memory’ garden. This is a place of peaceful relaxation featuring a small stream and the sound of gently clinking of leaves on the In Memory Tree. We’re lucky to welcome lots of wildlife to our grounds so be sure to keep a look out, you might just be surprised by who you spot. You may also see some friendly cows in our neighbouring field.

Without a small army of dedicated volunteers we wouldn’t have the award winning gardens we enjoy each day. We’d love to hear from you if you are interested in volunteering in our gardens. Information can be found below so you can join in and use your green fingers for good.

I like helping others and making a difference in the local community. I am passionate about gardening and working in green spaces. St Cuthbert’s were first to respond to my approach and they are such a vital charity.
