The Jigsaw Project at St Cuthbert’s Hospice supports children and young people who are experiencing grief, loss and bereavement. This may be because of life-limiting illnesses and palliative care or an unexpected or sudden death including suicide, road traffic accidents, murder and anticipatory grief. This service is free for the public to access and available to children in County Durham who meet the project criteria.
We hold planned small events for the families who come to the Jigsaw Project. It’s an opportunity for children and young people to enjoy a fun day with others, who may have experienced something similar. There’s no expectation for them to talk about what they have experienced, however if they would like to there are qualified and experienced counsellors on hand. From feedback we have been told that parents who attend events can also find it helps them when meeting similar families.
Thanks to a Community Mental Health & Learning Disability Connector Grant from County Durham Community Foundation we were able to hold a seaside themed Jigsaw Day at Nettlesworth Community Centre. Those attending were treated to fish & chips kindly donated by Bells Fish & Chips. Supportive SRC provided funding for the ice creams from Scoops N Smiles, as well as a donkey experience provided by Blackberry Donkeys. Durham Donkey Rescue also kindly donated some petting and feeding sessions with their miniature donkeys.
We’d like to say a big thank you to County Durham Community Foundation and Supportive for providing funding for this event and helping us to support those who need us at what can be such a difficult time. We were grateful for support from volunteers and staff who helped to make the event a huge success. One child commented “I really liked making things to remember daddy. You made me laugh, happy and we had a lovely time together.” 💚
